A Touch of Velvet
By Jennifer Cummer
The Velvet Room Boutique, located at 2248 W.41st Ave, is the new gem in Kerrisdale's historical shopping neighborhood. Owners Deborah Richardson and Jessica Elliott, a powerful mother daughter duet, believe that fashion is like art; every designer has a background story and the store is the art gallery in which to discover them.
This boutique strictly supports Canadian designers, offering carefully selected masterpieces from coast to coast, some of which are carried exclusively in Western Canada at the store. To name but a few; Eugenia Designs, of Montreal, offers elegant sustainable silk-hemp gowns with her signature rosette details; Saniya Khan Textiles, of Toronto, manipulates her fabrics to form unique classics; Juma, of Toronto, offers playful innovations for individual styling. All of these the owners hold close to their hearts as they do every line they represent within their boutique. They choose lines for various reasons but firstly the duet always tries everything on. They experience the quality, fit and drape of each design and become personally invested in everything in the store. Even if it is not their personal style, they care for each piece under their roof.
They also care for each designer, having direct relationships with many of them. It is not uncommon for the ladies to be communicating with the designers directly once a week. This communication offers direct feedback for the designers and a look into the future for the retailers. Another bonus to this open communication is an upcoming event; in celebration of their one year anniversary the boutique will hold a dress event on November 6-9th. This event allows designers to bring items that never made it to mass production, ideally finding their prefect owner. Shoppers will be delighted to find unique pieces for anything from that sophisticated dinner to their next gala event.
Another unique find to be discovered is their in-house jewelry line 'Coral Moon Designs'. Each piece is designed and made by Deborah with Jessica being the creative sounding board. The line consists of delicate pieces with functional details. Her gold hoop earrings with removable gem dangles offer twice the styling options. Versatile clothing and accessories is the backbone of this boutique. The ladies suggest purchasing a higher quality smaller wardrobe and wearing it to death, instead of over filling your closet with passing trends soon to be on the discount rack. They encourage their shoppers to find those investment pieces that can carry through with you in the future.
The Velvet Room Boutique's future; the ladies are soon to introduce a dress registry, similar to that in many high-end boutiques in Toronto. This registry will lay to rest the scary notion of entering a party or gala only to discovery your outfit beat you there via any woman's back; a frightful beginning to any evening! They are also planning more events within the store and collaborations with other retailers in their community. In short, they will continue to be very busy.
May we suggest you add their website to your favourites so as to not miss out on things fast approaching! www.thevelvetroomboutique.com.
