Helen Lefeaux annual graduation fashion show
By Alicia-Rae Light
Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design, established in 1981, held its 27th annual graduation fashion show on July 3rd at the Croatian Cultural Center in Vancouver. Friends, family, media and other members of Vancouver's ever-growing fashion community gathered to scrutinize and admire this year's exciting new garment fabrications.
Live beats spun by DJ PK Khorsadi filled the large room and set the tone for the evening, as the gorgeous models showcased the 26 graduate's masterpieces with attitude.
Past graduates also showcased their established clothing and accessory lines, including Randi Obenauer's line 'Ora' featuring carefully hand-crafted recycled leather handbags as well as Cassie Dee's 'Studio Scrubs' cleverly designed with the intention of going beyond boundaries of the conventional uniform standard.
All the designers showed standout detailing, effort and construction of their garments, yet some performances stood out above the rest.
Graduate Melissa Sihota's line can be summed up in one word, innovative. It's no wonder she won the fashion construction award. Her fearless designs are all one-of-a-kind, couture pieces. Her hot pink coat captured the eyes of the entire room as the model walked it down the runway.
Amy Bastow's collection featured a few classic pieces complimented with a modern touch. Her detail so stunning was emphasized in her high-waisted overalls and summer dress. Katie Limina, winner of the 2008 Golden Bobbin award, had a line highlighting the very essence of femininity with ruffle details, open pleats, a periwinkle piece alongside a light color pallet. Paulina Kielar's well-made, well-balanced line boasted an air of complexity and sophistication, with a coral and brown colour pallet and an elegant coat.
As one of only two male graduates of the year 2008, and the winner of the fashion design award, Davidson Manaloto's collection of silk pieces left the audience in awe. Featuring a silky brown couture cocktail dress coveted by every female member of the audience, its sweetheart cut v-neck top and wispy short flowing hem created an exceptionally unique look.
Congratulations to all the graduates of 2008, who put on an outstanding performance, bound to bring original, inventive and innovative styles to Vancouver and throughout the world of fashion in the near future.
