In the next issue (December) we are going to fearture a Vancouver based fashion label Evan&Dean, and here is a story-coverage of its recent fashion show.
Evan&Dean @ BCFW Spring 2008
By Miranda Sam
Saturday evening was a typical wet night, rain pitter-patteried over Granville Island, but fashionistas were nonetheless dressed to the nines for the BC Fashion Week finale by Evan&Dean.
Thirty-three year old Raymond Boutet, a former nurse and 28 year old Lyle Reimer, a M.A.C makeup artist, started the line in 2005. Evan&Dean, is named after their beloved nephews, and especially targets the established career woman.
Having to wait in line for nearly half an hour after the designated show time, I was quite pleased to take a seat in the front row media section alongside Fashion Television and CBC Radio fashion reporter JJ Lee. Watching industry professionals and fashion students alike hunt for seats they way they hunt for a fashion must-have never ceases to be entertaining, as it's always a good opportunity to view outfits in full motion. Engaging in fashion small talk with JJ certainly added to the general excitement surrounding the event.
The show opened with a brilliant orange sunset background projected onto sheer fabric screens. Dry ice descended on one model as she spun 360 degrees behind the picturesque scene. Although the intro was comparatively better than most I've seen at BCFW, it wasn't the most original.
The Evan&Dean Spring Summer 2008 collection was thematically inspired by… bugs, otherwise known as entomology, the study of insects. The muses appeared in many of the looks. The linen suit, for example, featured a patchwork of pieces structured to form the lapel and arm length of the blazer, resembling the structured abdomen and legs of insects. In any case, the boys either took the inspiration a little too literally or are simply like to be verbose with fabric.
Staying on target of their main consumer, Boutet and Reimer were smart to play it safe with beautifully crafted classic garden party dresses with cinched waistlines. But the team also found room to have fun by adding utilitarian plastic safety buckles to the belted frocks. Similar to the usage of the zipper for pure aesthetic purpose, they also used wide elastic bands to dress sleeves, necklines, and waistbands. The two even applied them to creative incision detailing on a maroon dress.
Gold linen was also an interesting staple of the Spring 2008 collection. The audience couldn't help but notice the glitter, even though metallics have been on international runways for a few seasons. The duo's golden glamour pieces, like the safari dress, were great punches of energy in the collection, but the exaggerated excavated detailing of the jacket and skirt seemed awkwardly thrown in.
Some of my favourite highlights of the Evan&Dean show include the ceramic-like headpieces and single-knotted ponytails on the models. Given a season of Victoria Beckham bobs, it was nice to see a classic updated. And that is exactly what the Evan&Dean line is all about - updating classic looks. For all the yoga mat-toting career women and yummy mummies in Vancouver, look no further for solutions to a work week of style. That is, if you can afford it. Evan&Dean pieces range from $220 to $1200 and are available at Miss Coquette Boutique, 4372 West 10th Ave. For more information, please visit www.evananddean.com
