2 + 2 = Lots Of Designs
By Marilyn Wilson
The fall season is always brimming with outstanding fashion events as 2 design schools have their graduation shows and local designers launching their Spring 2008 to businesses as well as showing off their Fall 2007 collections currently in stores.
The Evolution of Pop Music
Volume 13 in the very popular Stripped Concert charity series put on by Arc 2 Intertainment and CEO/Producer Andy Chu was run in association with the Vancouver Asian Film Festival to raise awareness for Make Poverty History. Fashions by Jolie Couture were showcased in 3 sections with the models strutting to live music by local singers: Fall 2007 collection accompanied by Rebecca Ramone, Spring 2008 collection accompanied by Camille Miller, and Spring 2008 Casual Luxe Wear accompanied by Rev Squad. Jolie's expanded line was presented with her unique artistry and saw models decorated with extravagant hairstyles by Dominic Emanual Belo and the runway covered with glitter and flower petals.

2nd Echo
The title of this fashion event has 2 meanings: 2nd Echo as this is the second time this event has been run and Secon-Deco emphasizing the theme of the fashion deco revival of the Rococo and Victorian periods. Put on the Rhythm Visuals + Sound Society, this non-profit event featured not only a runway show of original fashions, but art demonstrations including marbling by Candace Thayer-Coe, stencil by Jeff Dywelska, and painting by Nicholas Parker and Evans Li. The fashions from 6 designers covered a wide range from short, sexy urban club wear by Monica Wong and Diana Bui of Coquette Couture 1827 to diaphanous full-length gowns by local designer Natasha Kim.
Fiat Mode XX
This twentieth annual graduation show by Vancouver Community College showcased 22 designers from their 12-month full-time advanced program and 2-year part time certificate programs. Graduates were encouraged to design highly individualized mini-collections to showcase their own style. From Bonnie Merriman's exquisite corporate wear, to Janet Law's 60's flight attendant inspired garments, to Victoria Treacy's forest inspired creations; the show was diverse and entertaining. Outstanding students include Erin Kobayashi - Fashion Illustration Award, Becky Han - Hudson Fashion Award, and Sarah King (featured in our September issue) - Gabriel Levy Scholarship. (Note: As of September 2007 the school offers a new 2-year diploma program and a 2-year, part-time certificate program).
Metamorphosis, Return to Innocence
The Art Institute's graduation show is one of the largest of the season. While designers graduate every 3 months, the show is run annually and this year included 38 designers interspersed with dance and musical performances. The 2-year program has a strong emphasis on marketability, but each designer managed to find his or her own twist. The collections ranged from Egyptian inspired garments by Trisha Rampersad, to avant garde evening wear by Annie Wong, to a couple of endearing children's lines by Samantha Carter and by Stephanie Binnersley. Outstanding students include Annie Wong - Most Outstanding Collection, Nicole Simoes and Taron Layne Schmidek (featured in this issue) - Most Marketable Collection, and Krista Fergusson - Excellence in Execution.
